The site-specific and time
based interventions that make up my practice seek to question the
relationship between the context in which they are placed and the behavior that
it is adopted within it. They work as an add-on or extension to a specific
reality that I want to alter, transform, displace. They
are intentionally little perceptible, and through them I bring a state of
negotiation between the elements and agents involved in the space where they are
located. I work using what is already existing, with
immersive and specific proposals in relation of the space and the moment where the
projects are produced.

Sound intervention inside TRAFIC project’s van12 February 2020, 16h. C/Camí de la foixarda, Barcelona.
In this proposal, I contrast an hour of my own working day
within the cultural field with and hour of the working day
of Eloi Rodríguez Romeu, located in the services market,
questioning both through a sound intervention installed in
the radio of theTRAFIC’s van. A sound recorder has accompanied Eloi and me in our working hours separately,
recording one hour of the soundscape of each of us: Eloi
while delivering and me while producing this artistic proposal.During the show, located in the cabin’s van, the public has
access to the two audio files, each one containing one of the
labour hours. The listener can chose which one wants to
reproduce, being able to switch to the other one if wanted.

1 TRAFIC is an exhibition cycle that takes place in a van and it
always follows the same pattern: few hours of duration, according to randomly de-
termined dates and located where a parking slot has been found in Montjuic
mountain, in Barcelona.

Pictures of the installation during the opening.Photographs by Carla Canovas.

Installation, variable dimensions (in relation to the space
where it is installed). In the exhibition ‘Col·lapse 4: Instal·lar un fals sostre’ in Sala d’Art Jove the
installation had 17 pieces of sustained ceiling; Sala d’Art
Jove, Barcelona.
Extruded polystyrene panels, galvanized steel profiles,
threaded rods, hanging forks, omegas, white paint, plaster,
double-sided tape.Project built with the support of Marta Archilés.

Instal·lar un fals sostre is a project that challenges the
transition rules and construction regulations of the
institutional exhibition space where it is located,
compromising the relationship between institution, curators,
artists and the public.

<img width="1276" height="850" width_o="1276" height_o="850" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/16ceff2674f2650ffada00288ff46a37fe76244e70e1287b92fdab5201551db9/8.jpg" data-mid="73398817" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/16ceff2674f2650ffada00288ff46a37fe76244e70e1287b92fdab5201551db9/8.jpg" />
The project itself is an outcome of these regulations: due
the construction legislation it is not possible to lower the
ceiling of the entire exhibition room. For this reason, the
installation becomes a transfer of these imposed limitations from the construction plans to the exhibition space. The
ceiling is lowered till 1’60 meter in the places where it is
allowed, keeping the original height where the legislation
forbids the intervention. Through the originated corridors
and the sustained fragments of ceiling the work affects the
state and relationship of the bodies that habit this specific
space. This intervention not only forces a dialogue between the
institution and the public; the formulation process of the
project had implied a negotiation and friction also with
the other artists that had received the Sala d’Art Jove grant,
as well with the curators and coordinators of the same
program.

Site specific sound installation; Arnelaan 6, Vleeshal’s public
programe ‘Rooms of Now #2’, Middelburg.A fake wall, a hidden room, an audio file inside of the room.
Project built with the support of Vleeshal and the sound engineer Adrià Martí Comas.

‘Rooms of Now’ is Vleeshal’s public program in which
Middelburgers are invited to open up one or more rooms of
their house for an artist’s intervention.
On June 2, my intervention in Yolanda and Harrie Roosen’s
house comes up after visiting one of the rooms of the house:
their studio on the first floor. This specific room is full of
personal belongings that contain memories, things that are
stored in order to be remembered.
Leading up to the show, I recorded the sound of Yolanda and
Harrie inhabiting their studio, located in the first floor of his house. These recordings are played throughout the show
inside of the studio (through two speakers). I blocked the
public’s access to the room by building a fake wall in front
of the door thereby making the space ostensibly disappear.
The audience experience the installation from the corridor
outside. The resulting work is an empty white wall with the audio coming through, different sounds coming from a
place that the viewer can’t understand. The closer the viewer
gets to the space the more they may discover it.

Time based sound installation; ‘speak, memory’, W139, Amsterdam.24 hour delayed accumulative recording played
continually for the duration of the exhibition, 4 condenser
microphones, 6 headphones.
Project developed in collaboration with the sound engineer Adrià Martí Comas.

Variation for the project Every time before for the exhibition
‘speak, memory’ in W139. In this occasion, the recorded
soundscape from the day before is reproduced through the
headphones. That make the public be totally immersed in
the experience of yesterday’s sounds, while they are being
recorded at the same time.

“What Eulàlia Garcia Valls presents here is, in one sense,
a near-invisible, ever-accumulating sculpture. Its primary
material is sound, and you are part of it: an unobtrusive
arrangement of microphones records ambient events in the room even as her speakers are playing. What is
playing, meanwhile, is something like a stack of days. The
microphones document the presence of visitors while the
exhibition is open, and every 24 hours an overdubbed layer
will be added to the whole, such that the final recording is
a three-week mille-feuille of chancy sonic incidents. What
you hear is what happened here at the same time yesterday,
and – a certain distance into the piece – on the yesterdays
before.”2
2 Martin Herbert’s excerpt for the catalog of the exhibition ‘Once a Closed
Guarded Secret’.

Intervention during the exhibition ‘APERTUS 01: The ass
between two chairs’; Gallery Àngels Barcelona, Barcelona.

During the course of the workshop ‘APERTUS 01: The ass
between two chairs’ I have worked disrupting the common
space perception by gambling with conjecture, truth and the unnoticed with the project
A common view. For the
show of the resulting works, I present another site-specific
intervention, Desplaçar 5 cm: along the time the exhibition is
open, I am moving all the artworks showed in the room five
centimeters towards the gallery entrance. Day by day, and
one by one, at the end of the exhibition every artwork are
displaced five centimeters to the door. The traces of pencil
line and the holes in the wall, done during the exhibition
set-up, make visible this intervention.

Site-specific installation; Escola Massana drawing room, it
is produced during the workshop ‘APERTUS 01: The ass
between two chairs’, Barcelona.White paint, charcoal, pencils, markers, waxes.

Inside the Escola Massana there is a drawing room, with all
the walls covered with random drawings, graffitis and tags
from the students. The intervention in this case consists in
turning upside down all theses graffitis placed upon the
walls. As a first step, I have taken photographs of all the
drawings, tags, dirtiness. After, I have painted the entire
room white again, I have projected (with a beamer) the
photographs upside down, painting all the tags and others
marks in the same place they were placed but now 180o
twisted.

Artist book (envelope, 19 pages, 175x544 mm, digital
printing), 9 letters, 9 different installations in my room;
Barcelona and Rotterdam.

I began this project when I was living in Rotterdam. During
my stay there, I asked for the participation of my friends
and family from Barcelona to start the project. By mail
correspondence, I asked these people to send me a letter
if they thought they were in a situation in which I will take
part of it if I was in Barcelona. The letter contained: name of people involved, date, place, and some material from this
event or the space where this happened. After a while, I
collected nine letters that contained nine different situations.

During my move to Barcelona, I reconstructed these
situations, explained in the letters I received, using my
room as space and all the furniture as material to make the
installations.

Research project that collects a processual, collective,
curatorial and editorial work; Rotterdam and Barcelona.
Printed edition april 2015: 66 pages, 148x210 mm, soft
cover, digital printing.

This is a research project that looks to cut across authorship and
authority of art producers. The project is developed by a
succession of interrelated actions and decisions. The aim is to undermine individual
authorship in art production, working through the idea of
collectivity in the production process.
During the first part of the project, named ‘De Verbinding’, and placed in Rotterdam, it is
proposed a metodology to force the contamination
and influence between producers during creative processes. A production chain is proposed: you have to produce from an artwork that you are receiving from another person.
When the project has to be shown in an exhibition room, the problems arise: in a meeting with all the participants, it is asked to find out together which way will be the best to show and communicate all the project. When the format of an event or a performative talk is proposed to replace the tipical format to exhibit artworks, the general reaction of mostly everyone is a total negation: they want to have the material artworks placed in the walls. And then, is where the confrontation and contradiction appears: the necessity of the individual object, the confrontation between the main idea and the “participants” ones and the delegation of this important choice to the person who had started the research (meaning the delegation of the authority of the project itself).

Understanding this situation as an unexpected and undermining shift of the project towards itself, I decided to place all the artworks in the walls of the exhibition room, and during the opening offer to the public to draw, paint, react with pens in the space
between the pieces. With this gesture it is possible to make another shift towards the idea of collective and community, but this time thanks and coming from the imprint of the active public. After the opening, all the artworks are
put down, and what it is kept in the room is all the traces
the public has left. White walls with the public’s intervention
on it.
